According to a detailed investigation the Baltimore Sun did in 1995, Negroponte covered up some of the most grotesque human rights abuses imaginable.

The CIA organized, trained, and financed an army unit called Battalion 316, the paper said. Its specialty was torture. And it kidnapped, tortured, and killed hundreds of Hondurans, the Sun reported. It "used shock and suffocation devices in interrogations. Prisoners often were kept naked and, when no longer useful, killed and buried in unmarked graves."

The U.S. embassy in Honduras knew about the human rights abuses but did not want this embarrassing information to become public, the paper said.

"Determined to avoid questions in Congress, U.S. officials in Honduras concealed evidence of human rights abuses," the Sun reported. Negroponte has denied involvement, and prior to his confirmation by the Senate for his U.N. post, he testified, "I do not believe that death squads were operating in Honduras."

But this is what the Baltimore Sun said: "The embassy was aware of numerous kidnappings of leftists." It also said that Negroponte played an active role in whitewashing human rights abuses.

"Specific examples of brutality by the Honduran military typically never appeared in the human rights reports, prepared by the embassy under the direct supervision of Ambassador Negroponte," the paper wrote. " The reports from Honduras were carefully crafted to leave the impression that the Honduran military respected human rights."

So this is the man who is going to show the Iraqis the way toward democracy?

First the background: In the run up to the invasion of Iraq the CIA was under pressure from vice-Resident Cheney's office to find evidence of Iraq's weapons programs. In early 2002, there were reports by an Italian intelligence service that Iraq was buying Uranium yellowcake from Niger. Retired Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson was asked by the CIA to travel to Niger, where he once worked, to see if these reports were true. Ambassador Wilson traveled to Niger in February, 2002 and reported back that, based on his investigations, it was "highly unlikely" these sales had taken place. The documents related to these 'sales' had glaring errors — they were signed, for example, by officials who were no longer in government — and were probably forged.

In September 2002, Niger re-emerged. The British government published a "white paper" asserting that Saddam Hussein and his unconventional arms posed an immediate danger. As evidence, the report cited Iraq's attempts to purchase uranium from an African country.

Then, in January, President Bush, citing the British dossier, repeated the charges about Iraqi efforts to buy uranium from Africa.

The White House and the CIA chose to ignore Ambassador Wilson's findings and chose instead to go with the fabricated intelligence reports. So on July 6th, 2003, this article appeared in the New York Times:

This brought about a retaliatory act from the White House. Karl Rove leaked information to Washington Post reporter Robert Novak that Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame, is a CIA operative specializing in weapons of mass destruction. This information was reported by Novak in the article Mission to Niger eight days later on July 14, 2003. The Bush regime was intending to send a clear message of "Don't cross us or we will come after you and your family".

On Friday August 29 in a symposium in Washington Ambassador Joseph Wilson announced the person in the Bush administration, who had leaked it out to the Washington Post was Karl Röverer.

The affects of this leak has been a reported killing of 70 CIA agents. Since this information is no doubt classified it is unable to be verified. One thing is for sure, disclosing information that identifies covert agents violates the Intelligence Identities Protection Act of 1982. This law was specifically designed to prevent this sort of thing from happening and carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and $50,000. If that leak caused deaths of agents, Rove could be charged with treason. If Bush were to lose Karl Rove, it would be the equivalent to losing your queen in a game of chess. Rove and Cheney are the backbone of his administration. You can bet that the Bush regime will use every trick in the book to steer the public's attention away from the investigation of Rove.

There is already a lot of misinformation being posted on the internet about whether Karl Rove is really the grandson of Karl Heinz Röverer, the gauleiter of Mecklenburg or not. These are tactics to obscure the issue and bring confusion. The real issue is whether Rove leaked information that exposed the identity of a covert agent and led to American lives being lost.

Bush is confident the whole matter can be covered up as long as the Attorney Criminal Ashcroft can handle the 'investigation'. But if an independent council is appointed justice has a chance.

So far the media is doing a pretty good job shielding Karl Rove's identity. We see stories about White House leaks and such but none of them seem to mention the name Karl Rove .

As the investigation gets closer to Karl Rove, the danger of a 'terrorist' event to take the attention away from the White House increases dramatically.

Holding both U.S. and German citizenship, and special diplomatic status, Rove might try and seek refuge in Switzerland if it ever came down to his being prosecuted for these crimes.
